The Mission

Imagine trying to understand the complex interaction of people, equipment and technology in a new hospital space by reviewing the architectural blueprints. Now imagine bringing that interaction to life with purposefully designed simulations and a rich data set from which to make informed design decisions.

The environment is the invisible hand that shapes human behavior

The Challenge

The typical process for the design and construction of built environments in healthcare can be described as “fragmented” at best. It is not uncommon for an entire clinical space to be constructed by teams working in silos with little communication between them. Wander into any healthcare institution and the clinicians will likely be able to point out a myriad of issues with the design of their workspace. Design flaws are more than simple nuisances but rather require constant improvised or ad hoc work-around solutions that expose patients and providers to risks and safety hazards. In fact, these flaws can be nothing short than the difference between life and death.

Building for the Future

Built on years of experience in simulation, human-factors and acute care medicine, we have developed a rational and sustainable way forward for the design of clinical infrastructure that requires up-front investments in understanding system complexity and potential vulnerabilities.

This approach places the end-user, both patients and clinicians, at the center of the design process. At every point in the design process, the question should be asked: “Is the choice we’re making increasing safety or increasing risk?”

We utilize a suite of simulation modalities ranging from VR to tabletop simulations to full scale mock-ups, tailored to the phase of the project and the needs of the client.

The value of immersive design is clear with broad ranging return on investment (ROI):
  • Direct Value: Clinicians and patients are directly and fully immersed in the design process resulting in increased buy-in, greater workplace satisfaction and reduced job strain.
  • Social Value: Patient safety is enhanced by mitigating safety threats related to design plans. In one study, we successfully mitigated >80% through design modifications.
  • Operational Value: Our work demonstrates improved efficiency of >20% for high-stakes processes, translating to meaningful patient impact.
  • Strategic Value: Design timelines are accelerated by upwards of 21% resulting in earlier project completions.
  • Financial/Economic Value: Every $1 spent on immersive design translates to an estimated savings of $5 to $25 on future renovations or change orders translating to 500-2500% ROI.
“Imagine a radical collaboration that breaks down the boundaries between the disciplines of clinicians and healthcare design through a truly integrated process… Advanced Performance is revolutionizing how clinical spaces are conceptualized, tested and implemented.”
